DID YOU KNOW?

THE ADVANTAGE OF BEING A UNION MEMBER

    • On average union electricians are the highest paid in Utah?

    • Union contractors pay ALL health care and retirements.

    • Union members have GREATER job security.

    • The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers is a strike – less union.

    • Union members have a voice at work.

Q-If I’m union wont I have to strike?

A-The IBEW is a strike-less union. Every agreement in the U.S. and Canada states: “There shall be no stoppage of work by strike or lockout because of any proposed change in this agreement or dispute over matters relating to this agreement…” We solve our differences by talking about them, not through disruptive measures.

Q-Do union members really have a voice at work and in the union?

A-ALL assessments are set and voted on by the members of Local Union 354! The officers or contractors DO NOT set the amounts, WE VOTE ON IT! Our members have a working agreement that spells out many things. Wages, hours, and working conditions. We expect our members as well as our contractors to abide by these rules. Union members have a right to use the grievance procedure in our agreements when his/her rights are being violated.

Q-Aren’t union dues and initiation fee’s pretty high

A- -Utah’s union electricians enjoy wages and benefits of $37.58 per hour, $26.72 on the check. We pay a 7% assessment (set by our members) and $30.70 per month as over the counter dues. The initiation fee for our Local is $67.50. Apprentices pay half of their initiation up front and the other half when they journey out.

All of your dues and assessments may be tax deductable.

Q-I still pay some of my health insurance…….Right?

A-NO! Utah’s union electricians have health care and retirements paid for by our employers! Union contractors pay $4.50 per hour for you and your family’s health coverage!

There is no additional cost for you to have your wife and qualified children on the Health and Welfare plan.

They also pay your annuity and retirement!

Q-If I’m an apprentice wont I have to “start over” with the union?

A-NOT AT ALL! The union J.A.T.C. program may give credit for school and OJT.

Licansed Apprentices can call Dave or Carl at the J.A.T.C. (801) 975-1945 to find out how to get credit and have any other questions you have answered.

WORK SMART / WORK SAFE

Union contractors are almost 50% more likely to provide safety training for their employees than non union employers! According to a study published in the Journal of Occupational Medicine: Union [worksites] distinguish themselves by better training, more stable employment, a workplace where regular safety meetings are held.........They also had better knowledge of safety practices and felt they had more control over their own safety.

Who runs the union?

YOU DO!

    • You elect your own local union officers.

    • You run your own local union affairs.

    • You have your own negotiating committee.

    • You make the decisions on your own union contract.

    • You have your own shop stewards.

    • You decide important policies and actions of your own union by majority vote.

    • You elect your own delegates to the international conventions.

    • You -- the membership -- are the final voice of authority and decision in your Union.
